Feel the Heat with Durban's hot salsa band, Manteca, at Wahooz, Ushaka Promenade, on Saturday, May 4 from 12-4pm. This fun-in-the-sun-afternoon will feature dancing, dance lessons and Durban's vibrant, 12 piece, Afro-Caribbean band Manteca as part of Ushaka's May entertainment line up.
Audience members are welcome to join in the fun and learn the basic steps of this exciting dance form with beginner and intermediate classes by a Cuban dance instructor. Professional dancers from the local salsa dance schools will be taking to the dance floor in demos too .
Manteca features vocalists Liana Allegra Barciela and Rod Choromanski from KZN, Raul Rodriguez from Cuba and Kelly Burrows from Madagascar, award-winning Durban pianist David Langely, Durban's own Mark Momple on bass, Durbanite Jonathon Judge and Johan van der Molen from Holland on saxophones, local jazz trumpeter Daniel Sheldon, and percussionists John Drace from California and Alberto Chemane from Mozambique
The band plays classic salsa repertoire from New York, Puerto Rico and Cuba, plus their own compositions and adaptations of jazz and funk classics.
